Ivan Kilgore | Author, Activist, and Founder of UBFSF

Ivan Kilgore is an incarcerated author, activist, and the visionary founder of the United Black Family Scholarship Foundation and Zo Media Productions, LLC. He has been serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole in California for over two decades. Despite his incarceration, Ivan discovered his passion for writing and began leading numerous writing workshops within the prison system, empowering others through storytelling and self-expression.

Ivan has published four impactful books:

1. Domestic Genocide: The Institutionalization of Society

2. My Comrades’ Thoughts on Black Lives Matter: A Collection of Essays & Poetry

3. Mayhem, Murder & Magnificence: A Memoir

4. King: The Early Years

His works are required reading in universities across the United States, highlighting his influence in academic and activist circles. Notably, his story The Zo was adapted into a film by The Marshall Project, earning the prestigious 2021 Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence and Innovation, as well as an Emmy nomination in the News & Documentary category.

Ivan’s impact extends beyond his written work—he regularly lectures at universities in California, New York, New Jersey, Missouri, Florida, Montreal, and Louisiana. He also leads pioneering internship programs that engage student volunteers in meaningful social justice work.
