Ivan Kilgore | Author, Founder UBFSF

Ivan Kilgore is an incarcerated author, activist and founder of the United Black Family Scholarship Foundation and Zo Media Productions, LLC. He has been incarcerated in California for over two decades serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Shortly after entering prison, he discovered an ability to write that became a doorway for him to eventually begin teaching numerous writing workshops in prison.

He has published four books – Domestic Genocide: the Institutionalization of Society, My Comrades’ Thoughts on Black Lives Matter: A Collection of Essays & Poetry, Mayhem, Murder & Magnificence: A Memoir, and King: the Early Years.

Ivan’s books and other writings are required reading in universities throughout the United States. Notably, his work “the Zo” was adapted to film by the Marshall Project and winner of the 2021 Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence and Innovation and recipient of an Emmy nod in the area of News & Documentary.

He lectures for universities in California, New York, New Jersey, Missouri, Florida, Montreal, and Louisiana, and teaches several pioneering internship programs for student volunteers.
